You may find a good working guitar at a neighborhood garage sale. Acoustic guitars are easy to maintain and don't require much equipment. Stylistically, acoustic guitars can be used for the blues, folk, bluegrass, country, and rock ballads music. They can also be used to practice electric guitar technics without waking up the neighbors.

Electric guitars have the same notes and chord structures as acoustic guitars. They do require more equipment and this can add to their cost. You will need a guitar amplifier and a cord for starters. The type of amplifier you choose may well be influenced by the style of music your interested in playing. Many players use effects pedals to alter their sound as well. These pedals can range in price from $20 to as much as you want to spend. I would recommend buying good quality equipment because this will ensure you have the best quality of sound.
