Formal Upright Bonsai Formal Upright Bonsai The Formal Upright bonsai style is the basic form of Bonsai and the easiest style to achieve for a beginner. Informal Upright Bonsai Informal Upright Bonsai The Informal Upright bonsai style is very similar to the Formal Upright bonsai style except the top branch bends a little forward. Cascade Bonsai Cascade Bonsai The Cascade bonsai style of tree creates a sloping effect. The trunk turns and dips below the surface of the pot in a cascade effect. Semi-Cascade Bonsai Semi Cascade Bonsai The Semi Cascade bonsai style extends over the edge of the pot, but the trunk extends vertically then slopes gradually. Leaning Bonsai Leaning Bonsai The Leaning Bonsai style should grow at an angle of about 60 - 80 degrees relative to the ground. Broom Style Bonsai Broom Style Bonsai The Broom style Bonsai is suited for deciduous trees with extensive, fine branching in all directions about 1/3 of the way up the entire height of the tree. Literati Style Bonsai Literati Bonsai The Literati Bonsai trunk grows crookedly upward and is completely without branching because the sun only hits the top of the tree. Windswept Style Bonsai Windswept Bonsai The Windswept Bonsai branches as well as the trunk grow to one side as though the wind has been blowing the tree constantly in one direction. Double Trunk Style Bonsai Double Trunk Bonsai The Double Trunk Bonsai has two trunks that grow out of one root system and a single crown of leaves. Forest Style Bonsai Forest Bonsai The Forest Bonsai style looks like the multi-trunk style, but the difference is that it is comprised of several trees rather than one tree with several trunks. Roots Over Rock Style Bonsai Roots Over Rock Bonsai The Roots Over Rock Bonsai style bonsai has the roots growing over a rock into the pot.
