IDENTIFY

There are three ways to identify a plant on this app:

The Invasive Plant Atlas of the United States defines non-native invasive species as organisms introduced by humans, either purposely or by accident, which turn into environmental pests. Invasive species enjoy destructive success due to introduction without natural controls like pathogens, parasites, and herbivores. Some invasive species pose health threats to humans and wildlife. When left unchecked, invasive plants cause biodiversity loss and habitat degradation leading to economic damages estimated at billions of dollars annually (Invasive Plant, n.d.).

It’s not always easy to tell if a plant is invasive, and the gardener unknowingly introduces invasive plants into their local environment. Many invasive plants are beneficial to some extent, like fast-growing ground covers, while some end up in our gardens because of their beautiful foliage and blooms.

So how do you identify an invasive plant? The best place to start is by doing your research using the Plant Sleuth identification and reporting app. Just take a picture and upload it to our extensive database for identification. If you find a plant invading your local biosphere, you can report what you found to the appropriate environmental protection agency.

With our Plant Sleuth app, you can always rest assured you are adding beautiful plants and flowers to your garden while protecting the native environment.
