Saona Island - Dominican Republic

Our day trip to Saona was far more than we had expected. It started out with a bus picking us up at our resort. We then made the hour and a half treck to the other side of the island to Bavaro. On the way there our tour guide provided us with information about each area we were traveling through as well as a history of the Dominican. Once we arrived in Bavaro, we were led to a catamaran where we met a Dominican man who called himself Uncle Chocolaté. He was hysterically funny and took over the role as our tour guide for the duration of our trip to Saona. We boarded the Catamaran and began our hour long sail on the Caribbean Sea toward Saona at which time we were treated to Mamajuana (a Dominican drink made of herbs, wine, rum and honey), and endless rum (a main export of the Dominican) and coke. They also had two dance instructors about that taught us their national dance, the merengue. Arriving at Saona was breathtaking to say the least. Once there we were served a traditional Dominican BBQ and had plenty of free time to swim, snorkel, dance, or even relax in a hammock under a palm tree. On our way back to Bavaro, we rode in speedboats and got to stop at a natural sand bar in the Caribbean Sea. We jumped off the boats and were able to snorkel and look for starfish. If it's a relaxing day at the beach that you are looking for, Saona is the place to be!
